This includes either the elimination of all cross-connections OR requires installation and maintenance (annual testing and inspection) of a proper type of approved backflow prevention assembly at the water service connection whenever a potential hazard is determined to exist in the consumer's system. Backflow is the undesirable reversal of flow of water or other liquids, gases or other substances into the distribution pipes of the potable water supply. Backpressure Backflow is the reversal of flow in a system due to an increase in the downstream pressure above that of the supply pressure. Back-Siphonage Backflow is the reversal of flow in a system caused by the negative pressure (vacuum or partial vacuum) in the supply piping. Pollutant is a substance within a water system which does not constitute a health hazard, but does impair the quality of water in respect to odor, taste or utility. Contaminant is a substance within a water system which does constitute a health hazard; the consumer being subjected to potentially lethal water borne disease or illness.
